Stephen Seaton Halverson, born June 13, 1947 in Hollywood, California to Doris Grace and Richard Christian Halverson, entered eternal life on Wednesday, January 10th, 2018.
Stephen was a rambunctious, strong willed child and always had a flair for life. His younger years were spent exploring the hills of Hollywood where he discovered his love for music and singing. At age 11, Stephen's family moved to the Washington DC area to be part of the Presidential Prayer Breakfast Movement under the leadership of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Reverend Richard C. Halverson, Stephen's father, also become pastor at the most influential church in the area, Fourth Presbyterian Church in Bethesda, MD. During those years Stephen developed his singing talent at clubs and local events. His stage name was Stevie Spring. He sold cars, taught himself carpentry, and discovered a knack for entrepreneurship in order to fuel his starving artist lifestyle. In January 1971 he became a bassist and then lead singer of the world's first Christian rock gospel band, the Sons of Thunder, which was formed in 1967. He performed with the band for 3 years and they still hold reunion concerts and meetups to this day!
Stephen moved to San Diego County, California in 1991 where he discovered a new vehicle to express his love for architectural design, and construction; styrofoam! He learned that you could take a block of foam, mold it to any shape or design you could imagine, and then finish it to make it look and feel like stone, or even wood. This inspired him to create his own Architectural Design company called Contours in which his associates and employees respected him as an expert in his field. His work is admired around the country because his creations could transform an entire space and make any project sparkle with brilliance and beauty.
He was a selfless mentor and leader to everyone who knew him as he always listened without judgement and provided sage advice, and his wisdom had a tremendous impact in the lives of everyone who sought out his guidance. He had a tremendous gift for allowing everyone around him to feel important and included, and he gave new meaning to the word "friend" because you could always count on him no matter what was going on. He was a man of extremely high character and integrity, and the lessons he taught throughout his life to family and friends are some great memories that will be shared for years to come.
Stephen cherished his time with loved ones and had a true appreciation for his family. It was the simple things in life that he never took for granted, commenting daily how fortunate and thankful he was. Above all, Stephen was devoted to his wife, children and grandchildren. He always involved himself in the lives of his family and would give you his last dime if you needed help. He was a man of strong faith, believing in the power and strength of Jesus Christ's love and the beauty and peace that would await him after his passing.
His spirit and legacy will continue in the lives of his wife Paula who was the love of his life, his eight children; Stephen Jr., Sondra, Shara, April, Paul, David, John, Josh and Michael, 26 grandchildren, his brother Chris, sister Debbie, and an extended family of employees, co-workers, and friends.
Stephen will be remembered for being a great listener, his leadership, kind heart, and his granddaughter Carin was quoted as saying this upon learning of his passing:
"Today, my world's biggest witness of Christ's love and goodness passed away. Pray for my family as we remember my Grampy, Stephen Halverson"
