Russell Eugene
Murray
Jul 3, 1927 — Oct 1, 2019
Russell "Bud" Murray, aged 92, of Fallbrook, CA, passed away Tuesday, October 1st, 2019. He was born in Battle Creek, MI to Laurence and Hazel Murray. He joined the Marines in 1945 at age 17 and signed permission from his parents. His time in the military took him around the country and world as he served in WWII, the Korean War, where he was a part of the Chosin Reservoir battle, and Vietnam. It was during his time in Korea that he began exchanging letters with a woman that would later become his wife, Lillian Allen. After eloping in Las Vegas, they made their first home in Oceanside, CA where he was assigned to Camp Pendleton. This was their first of many homes across the country, with their children Debi and Russell, along with various pets. All moves and vacations included trips to Michigan to spend time with his parents, siblings, and their families. After serving his country for 25 years, he retired from the Marines at Camp Pendleton CA. After his military retirement, he worked for the City of Vista and then for North County Transit as a bus driver. During his retirement years, he traveled with his wife as often as she could drag him places, and was a member of The Chosin Few.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents, Laurence and Hazel, his wife Lillian, and his sister Ramona Moyle Wright. He was survived by his sister Janet Phelps and David (Helene) Murray; children Debi (Jim) Workman and Russell (Lys) Murray; grandchildren Trevor (Michelle) Workman, Jamie (Mark) Simmers, Kim Moffat, and Diane Murray; and great-grandchildren Eva and Nicholas, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Berry, Bell and Hall in Fallbrook on October 14th. He then will be interred at Riverside National Cemetery with his wife. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in Bud's name.
