Richard Frederick Hayes, 90, ("Dick" to friends and family) passed away on September 4, 2016, at the Regency, Fallbrook, from a sudden illness, while also dealing with progressive effects of dementia in recent years.
Dick was born in Detroit, Michigan on August 4, 1926. He was an only child and loving son to his parents Fred and Viola (White) Hayes. He was a star fullback on the University of Detroit High School football team and joined the Marines directly from high school In World War II, along with his best friend Dick Burkhardt, both serving in the Pacific area. He additionally served in the Marines in the Korean War.
Dick attended the University of Detroit Law School, and following graduation was appointed a Special Agent of the FBI. An intrepid investigator, he worked on many famous FBI cases throughout the country until his retirement in 1980. He was preceded in death by his first wife Evelyn (Glueckert) Hayes. They have two children, Margaret (Maggie) Hayes Cappasola, and Richard T. Hayes, (affectionately known by their dad as "Peggy and Rick") 5 grandchildren and 2 great granddaughters. Dick and Evelyn planned great camping trips, and with kids and trailer in tow, visited most of the National Parks in our country.
Dick, and his second wife Doris (Tosaw) Hayes, who preceded him in death in 2013, were blessed to have a 30 year marriage. And with that marriage came three wonderful stepdaughters, Susan Marks, Sharon Barnes and Shelley Kolb, 4 step grandchildren and 1 step great grandchild.
Dick and Doris traveled extensively- touring many countries around the world, enjoying that lifestyle well into their 70's. Dick also worked as a Real Estate Broker with Coldwell Banker in Walnut Creek after his retirement from the FBI.
Dick was a devout Catholic and longtime member of Knights of Columbus and was involved with the Men's Club at Saint John Vianney in Walnut Creek, and served as a Eucharistic Minister. He was also an active member of The Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI.
Dick leaves behind a powerful legacy of love for his family, friends and community. A man of great faith, and self-discipline, he had a kind and generous heart. He was a beloved son, dad, uncle, and a true friend to many, and we will miss him deeply, until we meet again.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. John Vianney in Walnut Creek, on Friday September 16 at 10:30am, visitation is at 10:00, and a reception follows mass at 11:30 in the SJV Community Hall.
