Obituary

Mike was born on February 14, 1945 in Laurinburg, North Carolina to Mary (Derenbaker) and Frank Kerr. His father was stationed there during the second World War. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.

Mike and his family moved back to San Diego when the war ended and that is where Mike spent the rest of his life. He attended Montgomery Junior High and Hoover High School, where he ran track and loved history classes. He belonged to the San Diego Rowing Club, attended San Diego City College and in 1966 was drafted into the Army where he proudly served. The Army took him to Fort Bliss- TX, Fort Sill-OK and to Camp King-Germany. Being a history and racing buff, Germany gave Mike the chance to visit plenty of historical sites throughout Europe.

After the Army Mike started his career as a Projectionist. His very first job was at the Vogue Theatre. Through the years he worked in just about every theatre in San Diego, including The Roxy, The Capri, The Savoy and eventually Mann Theatres.

If you knew Mike, you know his love for books, cars and motorcycles. From his first car, a 1953 Chevy, to his 1968 Chevy Corvette, to his 1972 Dodge Challenger, or any one of the many dirt bikes or cars he raced, he always had a car or bike to work on and enjoy. His grandson, Rocco, who shares Mike's love for cars, will carry on Mike's legacy and continue the work they were doing restoring the Challenger.

He is survived by his wife Mary, his step-daughter Heather (Stephen), his grandchildren Rocco, Dominic and Anthony, his niece Gina, great niece Kiley and great nephew Trevor. He was preceded in death by his twin sister Marian, his parents, and his sister Judy. Mike was taken from us unexpectedly and too soon by Covid and will be missed dearly.

Services will be held on Sept. 27, 2021 at Miramar National Cemetery. 2pm 5795 Nobel Drive San Diego, CA 92122. Please arrive at the Cemetery by 1:30 for the procession to the location.
