  • Mary passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026, at home in Fallbrook, California, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on December 16, 1942, the second of five children to Joseph and Margaret Brady in Belmond, Iowa. Mary lived a life defined by unwavering faith, boundless kindness, and unconditional love. Mary was a devoted wife and best friend of James (Jim) Furleigh of Clear Lake, Iowa. After marrying in 1963, Mary and Jim built a beautiful life together. They started their married life in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

  • Mary thrived as the wife of a U.S. Marine Corps officer, gracefully adapting to each new duty station during Jim’s thirty-year military career.In addition to supporting Jim in his career, Mary pursued a career of her own as an educator. She finished her degree in English and taught in five different states as she moved around the country with Jim. Mary culminated her career as an educator as a well-respected English teacher of 20 years at Potter Junior High School in Fallbrook, California. She was devoted to her students’ progress and growth, spending most Sundays grading essays in an effort to help seventh and eighth graders become better writers. Mary was a loving mother to 4 children. She was a cherished grandmother to 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren with 4 more on the way. A devoted Catholic, Mary’s faith guided every aspect of her life. She lived with grace, humility, and generosity, quietly serving others and leading by example. Her steadfast belief in God’s love touched countless lives.

  • Mary served passionately as a volunteer at both the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society and the Hope Clinic for Women. Mary is survived by her beloved husband of 63 years, Jim Furleigh; her loving children, Anna Marie O’Connor (John), Julie Kauffman (Steve), Dan Furleigh (Trace), and Kathie Porter; her grandchildren; as well as her sister, Patricia Belcher (O.T.). Her legacy is one of love, faith, strength, and selflessness. She leaves behind a family who adored her and friends who treasured her. “Well done, good and faithful servant. ”Matthew 25:23
