Obituary

Jim was born in Glendale, California, April 22,1930, the only child of Helen (Danforth) and Fred Voorhis. He passed January 16, 2023, surrounded by his wife and daughters.

Jim graduated from Globe High School, Globe, Arizona, in 1949 and served with pride in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He graduated with a Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from Flagstaff State College, now Northern Arizona University in 1956 and 1957. On November 24, 1955, he married the love of his life, Jeanette Engle. They celebrated 67 years of marriage last year.

Jim taught in Flagstaff Public School District, September, 1957 to June of 1966, and in Fallbrook Union School District from August 1966 to June, 1992, when he retired. He is survived by his cherished wife, Jeanette, and daughters: Joy Wenke, Jolena Voorhis, and Janine Welch and pre-deceased by his beloved daughter, Janna Duffy. Nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren will miss his positive and loving presence. Jim enjoyed life, especially hiking, dancing, camping, cruising, family get togethers, teaching, leather work, playing cards, doing card tricks, creating and building things. He was always Innovative and curious and exuded joy and love, caring more for others than himself. Jim always greetedpeople with a warm smile and always watched as any of the family left after visiting, smiling and waving until they were out of sight. He will be missed.

Dad was also an avid sports fan and played sports most of his adult life, including basketball and football.  While most of his life he was a San Diego Charger fan after they moved to Los Angeles he rooted for the Kansas City Chiefs and never missed a game.

He was a wonderful father and supported his daughters through all life's struggles. His motto was "as long as you are happy…" Jolena

Mr. Voorhis, Jim, Daddy, Dandy, Uncle Jimmy, Jimbo…it didn't matter who you were in our father's life…his beautiful blue eyes and smile greeted you with unconditional love and support.  An innovator before it was a "the thing to be", a card playing genius whose card tricks bamboozled children and adults including  doctors in the hospital less than a month ago.  🙃.

I asked him many years ago for his secret to being such an an amazing teacher and he replied "If you can teach them how to think, they can do anything."  I was flabbergasted and asked,  "How do you do that?"   His reply…a smile, a twinkling  of his eyes and the words "believe in them and love them."

A truly genuine man.  His motto:  Love and duct tape will fix anything.  True words for the story of our father's life.  ——with much love and gratitude for a life filled with fun, love and happiness - Joy Joy.

Daddy, thank you for guiding me through my life.  I am the woman I am today because of you.  When I walked across a beam, 15 feet in the air, I did so because you believed in me.  Your steadfast love, trust and insights is why I am a counselor.  If not for you, I would not have learned to put love first and smile. You greeted strangers with a smile and always asked how someone was doing.   Our family camping trips every summer were full of adventures, teaching moments and laughter (and an occasional breakdown).   You always reminded me that we are all energy, love, and light. Your genuine spirit will live on through the many lives that you touched.  Your light continues to shine bright in the universe of love right beside Janna.  Janine
