Herman A. (Arthur) Nied, 93, died at home in Fallbrook, CA on December 12, 2021. Arthur was born in Rochester, NY on April 24, 1928 to Hermann and Frieda Nied. He is survived by his wife Joan, of 69 years, his sister, Louise Zamsky (FL), his children: Herman F. Nied (PA), Heidi A. Fitzpatrick (PA), Arthur F. Nied (AZ), and Helena F. McHale (NY), five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Arthur grew up in Oaklyn, NJ, graduating from Collingswood High School, NJ, in 1946. After graduation, he attended Worcester Polytechnic University in Worcester, MA, receiving his BS degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1950. After graduation, Arthur enlisted in the US Air Force and served from 1951 – 1955. While in the Air Force, he was stationed at Patrick AFB in Cocoa Beach, FL, assigned to the Air Force Missile Test Center. During this time period he was involved with the early development and testing of Air Force guided missiles. In 1952 he married Joan Y. Blancjour, in Los Angeles, CA.
Following military service and until 1969, Arthur and his family lived in Medford Lakes, NJ. During this time, he was employed by General Electric's Re-entry Systems Division, in Philadelphia and King of Prussia, PA. While employed by General Electric, Arthur earned his MS and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. Beginning in 1969, Arthur and family resided in Ballston Lake, NY, while he worked in succession at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, GE Gas Turbine, and GE's Corporate Research and Development Center, in Schenectady, NY. Arthur was elected a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and received the Elihu Thomson Award from the American Welding Society. Arthur retired from GE in 1995, enjoying extended weekends at his cabin on the Hudson River in North Creek, NY, where he often went hiking and rock hunting.
Arthur and Joan became full-time residents of Fallbrook, CA in 2000. While residing in Fallbrook, Arthur was an enthusiastic member of the Oceanside Macintosh Users Group and volunteered as a docent at the Fallbrook Gem & Mineral Society.
