Everett Roy
Sweetland
Jan 25, 1928 — Oct 13, 2019
It is with great sadness that the Sweetland Family announces the passing of Everett Sweetland, aged 91 years. He was born January 25th 1928 in Cadillac, Michigan and passed at 12:20 am on October 13th 2019 from a stroke. He was one of six children born to Archie and Ida Sweetland. His siblings were Kenneth, Dorothy, June, Shirley and Leitha. In high school (Grossmont High School class of '46) he loved to play basketball where he earned the nickname of "Spider", due to his lanky frame and long legs and arms. In 1950 he was inducted into the army where he served during the Korean War. After getting Malaria in Korea he was never able to gain weight and was always called "Slim" by his friends with whom he worked for 40 years as a lath and plaster contractor. In 1959 he married the beautiful Italian 'love of his life', Mira Mai, and eventually built her dream house in Carlsbad where they lived happily until she passed away two days after his birthday in 2007. He is survived by his sister, Shirley, 14 nieces and nephews, a very large number of great nieces and nephews, his two daughters, Susan Denaker from Los Angeles, with her husband Robert Joseph Ahola and daughter Chloe Skew, and Janette Smathers from Carlsbad, with husband Edward Smathers and daughter Hayley Smathers. Though stubborn at times, he was always ready to laugh and was universally loved by everyone at Las Villas De Carlsbad, where he spent the last six years of his life and where he enthralled everyone with his singing during Karaoke and even in the dining room. Everett will be deeply missed by everyone who ever knew him.
