Obituary

Barbara Sue Rugg passed away due to complications of a brief illness on March 1, 2022

Barbara was born May 28, 1932, the third child of Glenn and Jean Sherbondy.

Barbara joined the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department in 1960, where she was promoted to the rank of Sargent. She trained new recruits fresh from the academy during their custody assignments.  She was a member of the Retired Female Deputies (RFD) organization and stayed in contact with other female deputies.

Barbara and her husband Loren (who was also a Sheriff) retired early and moved to Fallbrook, CA where they started their second career as avocado "ranchers".

Upon their move to Fallbrook they developed new friendships through the Newcomers Club, Book Club and with Square dancing. Barbara was also a member of the Women's Guild at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church and a member of the Fallbrook Women's Club. She developed many friendships playing her favorite card game, Bridge, and playing Mahjong.

Barbara and Loren enjoyed their "retirement" in bucolic Fallbrook. They traveled all over the world; they took an African Safari, saw penguins in Argentina, traveled around South America, went through the Panama Canal, and traveled throughout Europe and the United Kingdom. They also traveled throughout the United States (including Hawaii and Alaska). They always enjoyed an adventure.

Barbara is survived by her four children: Susan Mays, Carol Garcia (Thomas), John Rugg, and Donna Cox (Gregory), five grandchildren Hilary Fulton (John), Leslie O'Brien (Kevin), Natalie Powell (Michael), Kathryn Cox, and Johnathan Rugg (Danielle). Her husband, Loren, and her granddaughter Carrie Hall preceded her in death.  She also is survived by four great-grandchildren: Jillian Koff, Jack Hall, Ryan Hall, and Rosalie Powell.

Funeral Mass and burial will be at 1:30 pm. on Monday, April 25, 2022 at the San Luis Rey Mission Church and Cemetery, 4050 Mission Rd., Oceanside CA.
