Alan G.
Shirkey
Apr 21, 1943 — Dec 30, 2024
Alan Gene Nelson Shirkey passed away peacefully on December 30, 2024, at the age of 81, at his home in Fallbrook, CA. Alan lived a life defined by resilience, humor, and love for his family, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and joy.
Born in San Diego, CA, Alan was the youngest of ten children. He grew up in humble beginnings, facing the challenges of poverty and an abusive household. Despite his difficult childhood, Alan dedicated his life to breaking the cycle of hardship, creating a home filled with love, support, and joy for his family. Of his siblings, all have predeceased him except for his brother, Dean Shirkey.
Alan spent most of his life in San Diego County, with 17 years in the High Desert, residing in Barstow and Hinkley, CA, before returning to the San Diego area by settling in Fallbrook in 2000.
On May 25, 1961, Alan became a father to Angela (Angel) Klock (née Hall) while still in high school. Although he did not raise Angel, they lived together for several years, and he maintained contact and was supportive throughout her life. Over the past decade, Alan and Angel strengthened their bond, visiting one another at least once a year and cherishing their time together.
On February 5, 1982, Alan met Mary (Betsy) Elizabeth Shirkey (née Bonham) in Ocean Beach, CA. Betsy was a single mother of three—Aaron, Jacob, and Sarah—and Alan lovingly welcomed them into his life as his own children. Alan and Betsy married on December 26, 1983, at The Outpost in Hesperia, CA bringing two more children to the world, Margaret and Daniel in 1985 and 1986 respectively. Alan and Betsy celebrated over 41 years of partnership and devotion on December 26 2024. Together through their many years together they built a family grounded in love, humor, and unwavering support.
Alan graduated from San Diego State University in 1976 with a Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences/Liberal Studies. His professional journey spanned over four decades in the construction and inspection industry. Alan began his career in 1972 as a Combination Building Inspector with the County of San Diego, enforcing construction codes and regulations to ensure public safety. In 1986, he joined the Division of the State Architect as a Project Electrical Inspector and Construction Supervisor, playing a vital role in projects such as the Del Mar Grandstand and Barstow Veterans Home. After earning his Class I Construction Inspector Certification in 1999, Alan specialized in public school construction, leaving a lasting impact on educational facilities across California.
Alan was a voracious reader with an expansive knowledge of many subject matters and his sense of humor was legendary. He could effortlessly "Zoro" you with words in a hushed tone before you realized his true intent, and his family will forever cherish the countless times he declared, "I'm just joking!" His quick wit, lighthearted nature and relentless but gentle ribbing brought joy to every conversation, making him a favorite among friends and family alike.
In his younger years, Alan enjoyed surfing along the coast of California and Mexico. Later in life, he loved watching Jeopardy!, impressing everyone with his knack for answering nearly every question correctly. Though he wasn't one to share many stories, his quiet actions, steadfast presence, and frequent jokes spoke volumes about his character.
Alan is survived by his wife, Betsy, his children—Angel, Aaron, Jacob, Sarah, Margaret, and Daniel—and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a devoted father and grandfather who prioritized his family's happiness and health, ensuring a legacy of love that will carry on for generations.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Hampton Shirkey and Minna "Minnie" Bertha Mathilde Shirkey (née Schroeder), and eight of his siblings.
Alan will be remembered for his sharp mind, infectious humor, and steadfast dedication to his family. He broke cycles of pain and hardship with love and resilience, creating a legacy of hope and laughter that will forever inspire those who knew him.
